Chernobyl Disaster (Revisited)
What Happened
This is the second time the device has delivered travelers to Reactor No. 4 at Chernobyl—the first was Everett, Oliver, and Lucy's jump documented in Five Seconds Too Late. This time, Megan and Marco arrive in the control room in the minutes before the fatal test, but something is different: no one in the room can see or touch them, as though they've arrived slightly out of phase with the moment itself.
Historical Context
See the original Chernobyl Disaster archive entry from Book 1 for full historical background on the accident itself. This entry documents a distinct, separate jump to the same event, notable primarily for how differently it unfolds for the travelers involved.
Timeline of the Event
- Megan and Marco land on the observation level of the control room, unnoticed by anyone present.
- Operators run through a safety test, unaware of the danger building in the reactor.
- Megan and Marco realize a technician's hand passes through Marco without resistance.
- Alarms begin sounding as the test goes catastrophically wrong.
- The device pulls them out just as the first explosion tears through the structure.
The Five Seconds Connection
In Five Seconds Too Long, this jump is unlike anything the device has done before—Megan and Marco are present but intangible, watching the disaster unfold as if from outside of time itself rather than inside it. Megan recognizes it as "before" a moment she's already witnessed secondhand, raising unsettling new questions about whether the device is now showing them layers of the same event rather than single fixed points. It's a turning point in understanding just how much stranger the technology has become.
