What Happened

In the spring of 1989, student-led demonstrations calling for political reform and greater freedoms grew into a massive occupation of Tiananmen Square in central Beijing, eventually drawing in workers and citizens from across the city. After weeks of protest and a declaration of martial law, Chinese troops and armored vehicles moved into the square on the night of June 3 into the early hours of June 4, firing on unarmed demonstrators to clear the area. Estimates of the death toll vary widely, from the low hundreds by official government figures to several thousand by independent accounts, and the true number has never been confirmed.

Historical Context

The protests began as mourning for reformist Communist Party leader Hu Yaobang and grew into a broader movement demanding political openness and an end to corruption. The government's violent response shocked the world, drew international condemnation and sanctions, and remains one of the most heavily censored subjects in China today, with public commemoration of the anniversary still suppressed.
