What Happened

The chronometer registers a date of October 28th, year "75"—with no century attached. The trio lands in southern Idaho during a catastrophic supervolcanic eruption of the Yellowstone Caldera: the ground splitting open, molten rock raining from the sky, and an ash column blotting out the horizon. Everett is unable to determine whether they've landed in a a past eruption or a future one the device is warning them about.

Historical Context

The real Yellowstone Caldera is an active supervolcano that has produced three cataclysmic eruptions in the past several million years. Geologists consider a full caldera-forming eruption on the scale depicted here to be extremely unlikely on any human timescale, though smaller hydrothermal and volcanic activity continues in the region today.

The Five Seconds Connection

In Five Seconds Too Soon, this jump is the first time the device gives them a date it can't—or won't—fully resolve, raising the question of whether it just showed them the past, or a future still waiting to happen. The ambiguity is left deliberately unresolved in the book, and the team never learns which.
